Chevy Chase | Neighborhood Guide

Abutting the historic Town of Chevy Chase along the northwest border of The District, the Chevy Chase neighborhood of DC has become one of the nation's most attractive places to live in recent years. This spike in popularity owes much to an increasing desire among homeowners to live a suburban lifestyle within the bounds of the city and closer to its bounty of amenities.

The Neighbors

Blossoming and established families who enjoy the feeling of small-town living

Many residents of Chevy Chase have fallen in love with the slower, simpler pace of life which allows them to focus on family activities; as well as the immediate access and proximity to thrilling displays of history and international culture. People of all ages are well-represented with the exception of early twenty-somethings, owing to the dominant family vibe of the neighborhood.

The Real Estate Market

Single-family homes on good-sized lots

Though the neighborhood hosts a handful of apartment buildings and condominiums, by far, the greatest appeal to established and incoming residents of Chevy Chase is the abundance of single-family homes with plenty of space. The advantage of living on the edge of the diamond is obvious: land. Whether used for frolicking or relaxing, in 1907 the Chevy Chase Land Company made sure residents' homes continued beyond brick and timber walls.

What to Expect

Space to live and play

Though Chevy Chase is equipped with a downtown area, crowds are never an issue. Residents can feel comfortable moving about the community, knowing that they'll never bump into one another and that, more often than not, they're among other residents who likewise value the neighborhood's offerings. Chevy Chase also runs along the west side of Rock Creek Park, providing beautiful green space in which to run around and smell the trees.

The Lifestyle

Small-town living in an urban setting

With a strong presence of families, amenities within the neighborhood are relatively few, but DC's landmarks, commerce, and entertainment are only a short train ride away (a half hour or less to Metro Center on the Red Line). What residents get in exchange for this distance is a friendly, caring community full of neighbors they enjoy interacting with.

What Not to Expect

High-end shopping or a vibrant night life

As a neighborhood, Chevy Chase does one thing expertly: families. Originally platted and built at the turn of the 20th Century by the Chevy Chase Land Company, Chevy Chase was a streetcar suburb where those working in the heart of the District could get away from it all. Though it does not hold status as a historic district, residents and developers have helped maintain the area's original purpose. Though shops, restaurants, and bars are minimal, Chevy Chase does enjoy the presence of a library, a community center, two supermarkets, a handful of restaurants including the American City Diner, the historic Avalon Theatre, and Politics & Prose Bookstore.
