Originally platted and built at the turn of the 20th Century by the Chevy Chase Land Company, Chevy Chase was a streetcar suburb where those working in the heart of the District could get away from it all. Though it does not hold status as a historic district, residents and developers have helped maintain the area's original purpose. Though shops, restaurants, and bars are minimal, Chevy Chase does enjoy the presence of a library, a community center, two supermarkets, a handful of restaurants including the American City Diner, the historic Avalon Theatre, and Politics & Prose Bookstore.
