Takoma Park was once known as a commuter suburb on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad lines in the late 1800s. Takoma actually shares a name with the Maryland city that’s located just over the border from it. Takoma Park is known for its progressive politics and green movement within the community. The homes there are a mix of Victorians, Cape Cod homes, brick colonials and more.

The neighborhood is located around the Takoma Metro on the red line.

The neighborhood is really like a small town within a big city. There are great retro and thrift shops on the main street and a commercial district just a short walk away.

Takoma Park is a very active neighborhood. Main Street Takoma serves both the Maryland and D.C. Takoma Parks. Upcoming events include the usual Takoma Farmer’s Market located along Laurel Ave. Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

After the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays, there is a “Winter Camp” for pre-K through second grade that offers art activities, outside time, reading and more. In January, there’s a Friday dance class at Dance Exchange on Maple Ave.

Residents love the Takoma Community Center, which is a full-service facility that includes fitness classes, personal enrichment and summer camps. There’s also an indoor pool and computer lab.

Takoma is very walkable and bikeable community perfect for families with plenty to do.
