Takoma Park was once known as a commuter suburb on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad lines in the late 1800s. Takoma actually shares a name with the Maryland city that’s located just over the border from it. Takoma Park is known for its progressive politics and green movement within the community. The homes there are a mix of Victorians, Cape Cod homes, brick colonials and more.

The neighborhood is located around the Takoma Metro on the red line.

The neighborhood is really like a small town within a big city. There are great retro and thrift shops on the main street and a commercial district just a short walk away.

Homes in Takoma Park put homeowners just outside of the busy core of D.C., but close to a plethora of activities, restaurants and shops that are the jewels of city life.

Takoma Park is a very diverse community at the D.C.-Maryland border and is often called “Granola Park” because the community has a very active green movement. The Takoma Park farmer’s market on Laurel Avenue is very popular with the usual produce along with breads, pasture-raised meats and artisan cheese. It’s open Sundays year-round.

Takoma Theatre Apartments is a project that has proposed restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic Takoma Theatre at 6833 4th Street in Northwest DC. The plan calls for apartment homes with ground-level flex space.

The original Takoma Theatre was built to show movies, but also included a community forum, two stores, and a suite of offices. The two-story brick building was completed in 1923 at a cost of $60,000. In 1929, the Takoma Theatre became one of the first neighborhood theatres to show movies with sound. The theatre was acquired by Warner Brothers in 1935, but closed in 1980. The theatre reopened as a live performance venue in 1983, but closed again in 2002.
