Takoma Park Features & Amenities
New residential and retail space built in the last 10 years has brought much more to the DC side of Takoma along 4th St NW and Carroll St NW, including Cedar Crossing, Horace & Dickies, and Busboys & Poets. Another added bonus of the area is the Takoma Recreation Center, which offers a free fitness center and pool for DC residents.
On Sundays, you can really get a feel for how passionate residents are about both Takoma and the environment by attending the Takoma Park Farmers Market on Laurel Avenue, just one block over the Maryland border. Carroll Avenue, also just on the Maryland side, offers a number of great eateries. Mark's Kitchen, Roscoe's Neapolitan Pizzeria, and the Olive Lounge & Grill are all delicious spots to grab a meal.
Takoma Park Property Values
An eclectic community with an activist spirit, Takoma is a scene unto itself. The neighborhood was originally a commuter suburb on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad line in the late 1800’s. Takoma shares its name and identity with the Maryland city of Takoma Park just over the border and is often referred to as “Granola Park” by locals because of the progressive politics and active green movement in the community. Most real estate in the area consists of free-standing single-family homes with plenty of character. Homes are a mix of grand Victorians, quaint Cape Cods, classic brick colonials, and early 1900’s style bungalows, most with decent sized lots. Since Takoma is both easily accessible to the Metro and boasts a number of amenities, housing demand has been on a steady upswing.
Takoma Park Transportation & Location
Takoma has its own self-named Metro station on the Red Line, and several bus lines run through the area. The neighborhood is very pedestrian-friendly. Blair Rd NW and Georgia Ave NW provide direct routes to downtown DC and also out to Silver Spring, Maryland and the Capital Beltway (just 3 miles away).
Takoma lies within Northwest DC, and its borders are roughly Eastern Ave NW and Montgomery County, Maryland to the northeast, Van Buren St NW, Blair Rd NW, and Aspen St NW to the south, and Georgia Ave NW to the west.
