Columbia Heights Features & Amenities
14th St NW is the commercial hub of the neighborhood, and since it has been nearly maxed out from new development, 11th St NW has sprung up as another Columbia Heights hotspot. However, many of the neighborhood’s best restaurants and bars have been there for years. If you’re looking to check out the local music scene, try Wonderland Ballroom, and on the entertainment side of things, the GALA Theatre and Dance Institute of Washington are both in Columbia Heights. Grab some of the best pizza in the District at RedRocks, or, if you’re looking for a drink, a couple of the most popular local bars are Meridian Pint and Red Derby. Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park, is located in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood and provides recreation for residents.
Columbia Heights Property Values
Columbia Heights is named after Columbian College, the predecessor of the George Washington University, which was once located in the area. Duke Ellington owned his first home in the neighborhood and Marvin Gaye attended high school at the area’s Cardozo Senior High School. Columbia Heights is one of the District’s most diverse neighborhoods, and also its most densely populated.
Urban revitalization is a common theme in the District and especially in areas with easy access to public transportation. Perhaps no neighborhood better exemplifies that trend than Columbia Heights. Real estate is a mix of apartments and condominiums, as well as townhouses for both middle-income and affluent families. Columbia Heights is anchored by the newly redeveloped and pedestrian-oriented Tivoli Square and DC USA shopping complex. This area includes Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Marshalls, and Washington Sports Club, to name a few. There is also a massive Giant grocery store in the neighborhood.
Columbia Heights Transportation & Location
The area has its own self-named Metro stop on the Green and Yellow Lines in the heart of the neighborhood, and the Georgia Ave-Petworth stop on the same lines is at the northeast corner of neighborhood. There are several bus lines that service the area, including a Circulator bus. 16th St NW, 14th St NW, and Sherman Ave NW all provide good routes to drive downtown, although parking in Columbia Heights is difficult to come by. The Capital Beltway is about six miles away to the north and Interstate 395 is two miles to the south.
Columbia Heights is situated within Northwest DC, and its boundaries are Florida Ave NW and W St NW to the south, 16th St NW to the west, Spring Rd NW to the north, and New Hampshire Ave NW and Sherman Ave NW to the east.
