The current commercial strip for Shepherd Park is Georgia Ave NW, where there are several restaurants and independently owned boutiques for residents to choose from. Shepherd Park has the look and feel of a suburban neighborhood and the convenience of being close to all the amenities a major city has to offer. The name of the area comes from Alexander Robey Shepherd, who lived there when he was governor of the then-Territory of DC from 1873-1874. His extensive nursery is also the reason why many streets in the neighborhood are named after flowers.

While there is no Metro station within the Shepherd Park neighborhood, Silver Spring Station on the Red Line is just a few blocks north and Takoma Station, also on the Red Line, is a short walk to the east. 16th St NW, 14th St NW, 13th St NW, and Georgia Ave NW all offer direct routes downtown and several bus lines, and the Capital Beltway is just over two miles to the north.
Shepherd Park is located entirely within Northwest DC, and its boundaries are Eastern Ave NW and Silver Spring, Maryland, to the north, Georgia Ave NW to the east, the former Walter Reed Medical Center and Aspen St NW to the south, and 16th St NW to the west.
