The current commercial strip for Shepherd Park is Georgia Ave NW, where there are several restaurants and independently owned boutiques for residents to choose from. Silver Spring, Maryland, is also just a few blocks to the north and offers many retail options. The unofficial nickname of Shepherd Park is the “Garden of Diversity” and its neighborhood association is one of the most active in the District. The area has worked for more than 50 years to ensure the neighborhood embraces diversity among its residents.

Shepherd Park has the look and feel of a suburban neighborhood and the convenience of being close to all the amenities a major city has to offer. The name of the area comes from Alexander Robey Shepherd, who lived there when he was governor of the then-Territory of DC from 1873-1874. His extensive nursery is also the reason why many streets in the neighborhood are named after flowers.

Real estate is dominated by detached single-family homes, including Tudors, colonials, and Spanish haciendas. There are also a handful of garden-style condos and apartment buildings. The neighborhood is home to the former Walter Reed Medical Center at its southern end. There are big plans in the future for these 3.1 million square feet of space, including turning it into a mixed-use commercial and residential area.

Shepherd Park Transportation & Location

While there is no Metro station within the Shepherd Park neighborhood, Silver Spring Station on the Red Line is just a few blocks north and Takoma Station, also on the Red Line, is a short walk to the east. 16^th St NW, 14^th St NW, 13^th St NW, and Georgia Ave NW all offer direct routes downtown and several bus lines, and the Capital Beltway is just over two miles to the north.

Shepherd Park is located entirely within Northwest DC, and its boundaries are Eastern Ave NW and Silver Spring, Maryland, to the north, Georgia Ave NW to the east, the former Walter Reed Medical Center and Aspen St NW to the south, and 16^th St NW to the west.
