If you’re interested in moving into a neighborhood in transition, then put LeDroit Park high on your watch list. The name of the area comes from LeDroict Langdon, whose son-in-law, Amzi Barber, founded the neighborhood in 1873 (and dropped the “c” from the name). Barber was a local businessman and served on the board of trustees at Howard University. Langston Hughes, the great poet, called LeDroit Park home for a time. Griffith Stadium, home of the Washington Redskins and old Washington Senators, stood in LeDroit Park from 1911 to 1965, and is now the site of Howard University Hospital.
Although there aren’t as many dining and shopping options as neighborhoods to the west, there are some options in LeDroit Park. Try Thai X-ing on Florida Ave NW for out-of-this-world Thai cuisine. The Park at LeDroit offers a playground, a dog park, and a community garden.
The LeDroit Park neighborhood is a great story of urban renewal within the District of Columbia. The neighborhood was hit in the last half of the 20th Century by several factors. Over the past 10 to 15 years, however, once vacant real estate has been renovated and restored to its original grandeur. Many locals are attracted to the area by the relatively affordable housing prices, proximity to amenities and transportation, and the area’s distinctly residential feel. Victorian mansions, single-family rowhouses, and condo conversions dominate the LeDroit Park real estate market.
The neighborhood is located just one block from the Shaw-Howard U Metro Station on the Green and Yellow Lines. There a number of bus lines that come through the area, and the commercial epicenters of U St NW, 14th St NW, and Columbia Heights are a short walk or bike ride away. Rhode Island Ave NW and Georgia Ave NW/7th St NW provide good thoroughfares into downtown DC or out of the city and into Maryland. Interstate 395 begins close by, and leads either out to Virginia or to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295 via I-695. Parking tends to be easier during the day than at night.
LeDroit Park is located in Northwest DC, and its borders include Rhode Island Ave NW and Florida Ave NW to the south, Howard University to the west, W St NW and Howard University to the north, and 2nd St NW to the east.
