The name of the area comes from LeDroict Langdon, whose son-in-law, Amzi Barber, founded the neighborhood in 1873 (and dropped the “c” from the name). Barber was a local businessman and served on the board of trustees at Howard University. Langston Hughes, the great poet, called LeDroit Park home for a time. Griffith Stadium, home of the Washington Redskins and old Washington Senators, stood in LeDroit Park from 1911 to 1965, and is now the site of Howard University Hospital.
