Shaw

Shaw is currently in the process of a great renaissance. Like its neighbor LeDroit Park, the area was hit hard in the second half of the 20th Century by several issues. However, since the turn of this century, a great deal of vacant real estate has been renovated and restored. Affordable housing prices, closeness to amenities and public transportation, and the area’s distinctly residential feel are drawing people back to Shaw in great numbers. Shaw Features & Amenities

Shaw's dining and shopping options have increased immensely in the last few years, and are expected to continue to grow. The very east end of the U Street Corridor forms the northwest boundary of the neighborhood, and this is where most of the commercial activity is located. Both residents and business owners here take quite a bit of pride in their local community and there are some great spots to grab a truly authentic meal; we recommend Zenebech Injera for very affordable and delicious Ethiopian food. In fact, 9th Street NW between T and U Streets NW (two blocks west of Shaw) has become the unofficial “Little Ethiopia” of DC. Also new to Shaw is CityMarket, which provides a hotel, residential units, parking, and the largest supermarket in the District. There are two recreation centers around the neighborhood, including Shaw and the recently renovated Kennedy.

Shaw Property Values

Shaw is currently in the process of a great renaissance. Like its neighbor LeDroit Park, the area was hit hard in the second half of the 20th Century by several issues. However, since the turn of this century, a great deal of vacant real estate has been renovated and restored. Affordable housing prices, closeness to amenities and public transportation, and the area’s distinctly residential feel are drawing people back to Shaw in great numbers. Shaw real estate consists of single-family Victorian row houses and condominium conversions.

The neighborhood derives its name from Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. It had its beginnings as a freed slave encampment on the outskirts of Washington City in the late 19th Century. The neighborhood then played a major role in the Harlem Renaissance of the early 20th Century. Duke Ellington, the legendary jazz pianist, once called Shaw home. The neighborhood is a heritage tourism hotspot, and includes the renovated Howard Theater, public art murals, and the adjacent Howard University.

Shaw Transit & Location

There are two Metro stops on the yellow/green line that serve the Shaw neighborhood: Shaw-Howard University and Mount Vernon Square-7th Street-Convention Center. There are several bus lines that run through the neighborhood as well. The neighborhood is very walkable, and both Logan Circle and the Penn Quarter are less than a 15-minute stroll away. Rhode Island Ave NW and Georgia Ave NW/7th St NW provide good thoroughfares into downtown DC or out of the city and into Maryland. Interstate 395 begins at the south end of Shaw, and leads either out to Virginia or to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695.

The Shaw neighborhood is located in Northwest DC, and its unofficial boundaries are S St NW, 9th St NW, and Florida Ave NW to the north, New Jersey Ave NW to the east, New York Ave NW and Massachusetts Ave NW to the south, and 11th St NW to the west.
