There are more than 30 Asian-themed businesses and restaurants in the neighborhood as part of Chinatown. However, it is also home to a number of popular American restaurants and nightclubs. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum are in the neighborhood, as are the Newseum, the Shakespeare Theatre and the International Spy Museum. Adding to the Chinese flair of the area are the Chinese Friendship Archway and the annual Chinese New Year’s parade.
Gallery Place, next to the Verizon Center, offers an abundance of residential, office, and retail space, including a movie theater and bowling alley. On a similar note, CityCenterDC is set to open soon and will provide an additional 515,000 square feet of office space, 674 residential units and 184,700 square feet of retail space to the area. If you’re looking to get away from the city vibe, the National Mall is just a few blocks south.
The transformation Chinatown has undergone in the past 15 years might be the most substantial of any neighborhood in Washington, DC. It has become arguably the premier urban living experience within the District. Much of the rise of Chinatown (also called Penn Quarter) is owed to professional sports team owner and real estate developer Abe Pollin. Pollin owned the Washington Capitals, the Washington Wizards, and the Washington Mystics, and was the visionary behind the transformation of the area. Anchored by the building of the Verizon Center, Chinatown is a flurry of activity nearly every day of the year. The Verizon Center hosts an average of 220 events per year, including the Capitals, Wizards, Mystics, Georgetown basketball, and concerts. Chinatown real estate is dominated by newer office buildings and condos, which rank as some of the most expensive in Washington, DC.
The neighborhood sits at the confluence of all six Metro Lines: Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange, and Silver. Three different Metro stations service Chinatown: from west to east these are Metro Center, Gallery Place-Chinatown, and Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter. The Georgetown-Union Station Circulator bus runs through the neighborhood and there is a free shuttle that runs along the H Street Corridor from the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station to the Minnesota Avenue Metro stop on the Orange Line. Union Station is one mile east, providing extensive train and bus service into and out of DC, and Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport is five stops away on Metro’s Yellow Line. Interstate 395 runs close by, and leads either out to Virginia or to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695.
Chinatown is located in Northwest DC, and its borders are 6th St NW to the east, Pennsylvania Ave NW to the south, 13th St NW to the west, and G St NW to the north.
