Eckington Features & Amenities

The area is almost entirely residential except for McKinley Technology High School and Langley Education Campus, which are situated in the middle of Eckington. The neighborhood is located just one mile north of the U.S. Capitol building and is a short Metro or cab ride away from the commercial options in Penn Quarter or Logan Circle. The Metropolitan Branch Trail offers a great path for bikers, joggers, and walkers.

Eckington Property Values

Eckington is one of the smallest neighborhoods in DC and is lauded for its close proximity to downtown DC and reasonable prices. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington. The name derives from Eckington England: birthplace of James Gales, Jr., who served as mayor of Washington from 1827 to 1830. The area was one of the first to have a stop on Washington’s first electrical railway in the 1880’s. Real estate in Eckington is made up mostly of century-old row houses and some newer condo developments, including NoMa West at the south end of the neighborhood.

EckingtonTransportation & Location

Two Metro stations on the Red Line serve Eckington: Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood at the northeast corner and NoMa-Gallaudet U at the southeast corner. There are Metrobus lines that run through the neighborhood as well. North Capitol St NE, Rhode Island Ave NE, and New York Ave NE all provide direct roads into downtown DC or out to the Maryland suburbs. Interstate 395 begins less than two miles southwest of Eckington, and leads either out to Virginia or to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295) can also be accessed via New York Ave NE in less than five miles.

Eckington is situated within Northeast DC, and its borders are Rhode Island Ave NE to the north, Metropolitan Branch Trail and the Metro Red Line to the east, New York Ave NE and Florida Ave NE to the south, and North Capitol St NE to the west.
