The name derives from Eckington England: birthplace of James Gales, Jr., who served as mayor of Washington from 1827 to 1830. The area was one of the first to have a stop on Washington’s first electrical railway in the 1880’s. Eckington is situated within Northeast DC, and its borders are Rhode Island Ave NE to the north, Metropolitan Branch Trail and the Metro Red Line to the east, New York Ave NE and Florida Ave NE to the south, and North Capitol St NE to the west.
