Eckington is one of the smallest neighborhoods in DC and is lauded for its close proximity to downtown DC and reasonable prices. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington. The name derives from Eckington England: birthplace of James Gales, Jr., who served as mayor of Washington from 1827 to 1830. The area was one of the first to have a stop on Washington’s first electrical railway in the 1880’s. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295) can also be accessed via New York Ave NE in less than five miles.
Eckington is situated within Northeast DC, and its borders are Rhode Island Ave NE to the north, Metropolitan Branch Trail and the Metro Red Line to the east, New York Ave NE and Florida Ave NE to the south, and North Capitol St NE to the west.
