There is not much in the way of retail in the neighborhood, but Uncle Chip’s Café and Catania Bakery on North Capitol St NW are definitely worth checking out. For more commercial choices, residents need only to take a short walk south, west, or north to NoMa, Shaw, or Bloomingdale. Dunbar High School dominates much of Truxton Circle, and next door is the New York Avenue/Dunbar Recreation Center and Playground, which gives recreational options to the area’s youth. Truxton Circle offers great views of the U.S. Capitol building, which is located about one mile south.
Truxton Circle is a small, triangle-shaped neighborhood just north of the U.S. Capitol and Union Station that is becoming a hot commodity. The neighborhood is located just east of Shaw and north of NoMa, which are both extremely popular and have made Truxton Circle a location in demand. The name of the area comes from a traffic circle that is no longer in existence, which was built in honor of late 18th Century Navy Commodore Thomas Truxtun. Over time the spelling changed to “Truxton” and the circle was demolished in 1947. Truxton Circle real estate consists mostly of stately 19th Century row houses.
There is no Metro station directly within in Truxton Circle, but the NoMa-Gallaudet U stop on the Red Line stands just east of the neighborhood and the Mount Vernon Sq and Shaw-Howard U stops on the Green and Yellow Lines are a few blocks west. There are Metrobus lines that serve the area as well. Union Station is located a few blocks south of the neighborhood, and is home to a Metro Red Line stop as well as Amtrak, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains. Union Station is also the DC home for Greyhound, Megabus, BoltBus, and Peter Pan bus lines. I-395 starts one block from the area, and connects drivers to Virginia or out to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695. New York Ave NW/NE and Rhode Island Ave NW both lead out to Prince George’s County, Maryland, or into downtown DC. New York Ave NW also offers a direct route to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295).
Truxton Circle sits within Northwest DC and its rough boundaries are New Jersey Ave NW to the west, Rhode Island Ave NW and Florida Ave NW to the north, North Capitol St NW to the east, and New York Ave NW to the south.
