The Neighbors
A diverse mix of long-time residents and stroller pushers
Many of Petworth's residents have lived there for most or all of their lives, enjoying the quick access to downtown DC and the strong feeling of community. Among those new residents who've cultivated an appreciation for the neighborhood's convenience and community are many young families with kids or plans to have them. As you'll find at the Petworth Library and farmers' market, and events such as Celebrate Petworth, the neighborhood's offerings draw in homeowners and renters of all demographics.

The Real Estate Market
Rowhouses, condos, apartments, some detached single-family dwellings, and more rowhouses
Because of the neighborhood's increased popularity of late, a number of new apartment buildings have risen up, such as The Swift Petworth atop the beautifully rebuilt Safeway; and plenty of elegantly finished condominiums, including The Montage, The Clayton, and The Quincy at 14th. However, the defining property style of Petworth by far is the attached rowhouse; providing an affordable option for young families who want their own space--and maybe a patch of lawn out back!

What to Expect
Porch culture!
Perhaps the quintessential element of Petworth real estate is the front porch. Petworth's abundant pre-war rowhouses are noticeably distinguished from those of other historic neighborhoods such as Georgetown, Capitol Hill, or Logan Circle by the addition of a porch. As proof of good design, the porches in Petworth are well utilized. Residents can use them for entertaining family or close friends, or for getting to know neighbors. Chances are excellent that if you walk through Petworth on a not-too-chilly day, you'll be greeted by a number of kindly residents.

The Lifestyle
Time for family and friends
During Petworth's growth over the past several years a number of local business have sprouted alongside the many longstanding shops and eateries lining Georgia Avenue NW. These businesses entice Petworthians to stay local in their free time and spend more time with friends and family and less time on the Metro or in a car. Newer arrivals include Slim's Diner, Qualia Coffee, and Upshur Street Books. Several public venues help keep free time free including the Petworth Recreation Center and the beloved Petworth Neighborhood Library.

What Not to Expect
High-end shopping and the crowds that come with it
Georgia Avenue has long been Petworth's commercial thoroughfare, but there you're more likely to satisfy life's needs and the occasional whim than you are to find designer brands. With that, however, comes the privilege of space to stretch out. With the exception of the occasional street fair and Saturdays at the farmers' market, you'll never bump in to anyone that you didn't mean to.

You'll Fall In Love With
