Kalorama Features & Amenities

Every spring many embassies in the neighborhood host an open house as part of Cultural Tourism DC events. The embassy open house tours typically gather throngs of visitors so be sure to get there early. Two other “must visit” locations to get a feel for Kalorama are Mitchell Park, off Columbia Road NW, and the Spanish Steps, at S St and 22nd St NW. Kalorama Park in the northern end of the neighborhood and Rock Creek Park to the west also offer respite from city living. There are several great dining options on Columbia Rd NW, including the ever popular So’s Your Mom sandwiches.

Kalorama Property Values

The area that makes up Kalorama is almost entirely residential, yet very convenient to the Metro, Rock Creek Park, and the amenities of Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, and Woodley Park. It gets its name from the name of the decadent home of poet Joel Barlow in the early 19th Century. Kalorama is a Greek word that means “fine view.” The neighborhood is known for being affluent and secluded, and is home to a number of embassies and pre-war condos of historic significance. Kalorama is actually two adjacent neighborhoods, Sheridan-Kalorama (or Kalorama Heights) to the south and Kalorama Triangle to the north.

Kalorama real estate comes at a premium, but the area also boasts some of the most desirable addresses in all of Washington, DC. Stately rowhouses, massive single-family detached homes, and ornate multi-family buildings are the norm in this neighborhood. Throughout its storied history, Kalorama has been home to at least five former presidents: William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Woodrow Wilson house on S Street NW is now a designated National Historical Landmark. Other notable residents include former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Senator Ted Kennedy and historian Elizabeth Eisenstein.

Kalorama Transportation & Location

The neighborhood does not have a Metro station directly within it, but is within walking distance to both the Woodley Park and Dupont Circle stops on the Red Line. Several bus lines run through the area as well, including the Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-McPherson Square Circulator route. Connecticut Ave NW and Massachusetts Ave NW provide good routes into downtown DC and out into the Maryland suburbs. For a more scenic option, try Rock Creek Parkway, which runs along the western edge of the neighborhood. Interstate 66 begins less than two miles south of the area and heads out into Virginia.

Kalorama is situated within Northwest DC, and its boundaries are Rock Creek Park and Calvert St NW to the north, Columbia Rd NW and Florida Ave NW to the east, Q St NW to the south, and Rock Creek Park to the west.
