The neighborhood was originally developed to house elected officials and other employees of the United States' fledgling government and though the neighborhood has become a home for people of all professions in the last 200 years, the trend continues. With an abundance of interns and staffers enjoying the quick commute, it comes as no surprise that nearly a third of Capitol Hill residents fall within the mid-twenties to mid-thirties age bracket. All demographics are well represented, however, and the neighborhood's plethora of single-family homes make it a popular spot to raise a family.

Following the American Civil War, a surge of Victorian rowhouses sprouted in what is now the Capitol Hill Historic District. Separated from the busier tourist-prone neighborhoods by the Capitol at the eastern extreme of the National Mall, Capitol Hill maintains a village or small-town vibe.
