Foggy Bottom Features & Amenities
The Foggy Bottom area is dominated by George Washington University and its hospital, and is home to some great hotels and restaurants. Try Tonic at Quigley’s Pharmacy for a brunch hotspot. Foreign dignitaries and diplomats, as well as celebrities and business power brokers, frequent the neighborhood. The area is home to a number of DC landmarks including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, DAR Constitution Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (which used to be the site of the Olde Heurich Brewing Company), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Department of State. There are many shopping options, including a massive Whole Foods grocery store. The south end of Rock Creek Park, an area where you’ll find one of the most picturesque biking and running paths in the city, is at the west side of the neighborhood. The National Mall and its monuments, fields, and more is right across Constitution Avenue NW and the White House lies just east of Foggy Bottom across 17th Street NW. Washington Circle Park is at the north end of the neighborhood and provides a beautiful little park amidst the bustling city.
Foggy Bottom Property Values
Foggy Bottom was once home of much of Washington, DC’s early industry and commerce. Positioned along the Potomac River directly between the Capitol and what was once the port of Georgetown, the neighborhood was an ideal location for early industrialists to conduct business. In the 18th Century, prior to its becoming part of the city of Washington, the area was known as the German immigrant town of Hamburgh. The neighborhood is said to owe its current name to the fog that would roll off the Potomac and settle in this relatively low and flat area along the river.
Modern day Foggy Bottom has come a long way from its blue collar roots. You’ll find some of the most expensive real estate in the entire city here, mostly in the form of townhouses and condominiums, but bargains can be found. Its one of the most transient neighborhoods in all of DC, and due to this prices seem to stay high.
Foggy Bottom Transportation & Location
The neighborhood has its own Metro station on the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines: Foggy Bottom-GWU Station. Farragut North Station on the Red Line and Farragut West Station on the Blue, Orange, and Silver are also within short walking distance from the area. The neighborhood has many bus lines servicing it, including the Georgetown-Union Station Circulator bus. Interstate 66 begins in Foggy Bottom and heads out into Virginia, and both the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge and the Arlington Memorial Bridge connect the neighborhood with Virginia and the George Washington Memorial Parkway. K St NW provides a direct route to Georgetown for drivers. Reagan National Airport is a 10-minute drive away.
Foggy Bottom is situated within Northwest DC, and its boundaries are the Potomac River and Rock Creek to the west, Pennsylvania Ave NW to the north, 17th St NW to the east, and Constitution Ave NW to the south.
