Petworth is popping up with new buildings and developments every week it seems! As recent as April 2017, two properties were on the market after being converted into condo buildings. The buildings, now known as the Montage, were formerly a single-family home and an office building, respectively. The homes, which are very close to the Georgia Ave./Petworth Metro stop, were sold so quickly they are currently 75 percent full. The units are priced around $600,000.
It was announced in November 2016 that the Rock Creek Baptist Church at 8th and Upshur Sts. would move to Maryland and be demolished. In its place will be brand-new condominiums. Once construction begins, the entire project is expected to take less than a year.
Millennial developer Jay Gross has also bought row houses on Grant Circle with the hope of redevelopment into condos, despite arguments with residents.
Petworth is also home to one of the Washington Post’s “Top 10 New Restaurants” as of May 2017. Himitsu is a small Japanese restaurant known for its Peking duck, biscuits and savory fried shrimp. If you’re up for some Mexican food, the area just added Taqueria del Barrio, which serves 14 different kinds of tacos. Most notable is the pork and pineapple “Al Pastor” taco.
Petworth is also getting environmentally conscious. Builder Tanya Topolewski completely rebuilt a now 94-year-old row house in Petworth to use a lot less energy than it had in the past (through the installation of things like solar panels). The house ended up selling in 2013 for $725,000.
