U Street Features & Amenities

True to its history, U Street is home to some of the best local music venues in all of Washington, DC. The 930 Club, Black Cat, Velvet Lounge, U Street Music Hall, Lincoln Theatre, and acclaimed Bohemian Caverns are all fantastic venues to get up close and personal with regional, national, and international talent. The neighborhood’s diversity doesn’t stop at music, as there are a huge variety of eateries and bars on U Street NW or just a block or two away. Bistro La Bonne for a sit-down meal and Seasonal Pantry for takeout are two of our favorites. There is also a Matchbox pizza location on 14th St NW. Local 16 and Marvin are very popular with the fashionable singles crowd, and the Gibson is a hot spot for mixology lovers. Of course, Ben’s Chili Bowl, the iconic DC landmark and arguably the city’s only trademark food, has been on U Street NW since 1958 and is open nearly around the clock. U Street hosts Trader Joe's and Yes! Organic Market while a Whole Foods Market stands just south in Logan Circle.

The U Street Corridor has a rich and eclectic history deeply rooted in the African American community as well as the arts and music scene throughout the 1900’s. Until the 1920’s, the neighborhood was home to the largest African-American community in the country and was known as “Black Broadway,” an idiom coined by actress and singer Pearl Bailey. In fact, the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum is located at the east end of the U Street Corridor. The neighborhood was once home to jazz giants Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Frank Wess, and Billy Taylor. After the riots of the late 1960’s the neighborhood suffered years of decay, but has undergone a major revitalization since the turn of the 21st Century.

U Street Transportation & Location

The U Street Metro station on the Green and Yellow Lines is located in the heart of the neighborhood, and the Shaw-Howard U stop on the same lines is just a few blocks east. There are many bus lines that run through the U Street Corridor, including the Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-McPherson Square DC Circulator bus. 16th St NW, 14th St NW, and Vermont Ave NW all provide direct and quick routes into downtown DC. Interstate 395 begins less than two miles southwest of the neighborhood, and leads either out to Virginia or to the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695.

The U Street Corridor is located in Northwest DC, and its rough boundaries are W St NW and Florida Ave NW to the north, 9th St NW to the east, S St NW, 14th St NW, S St NW to the south, and 16th St NW to the west.
