The Shops at Dakota Crossing have helped to re-energize the neighborhood in terms of retail. Costco is the centerpiece of Dakota Crossing, which is in the next phase of construction that will include a Marshalls and more restaurant options. Hundreds of new townhouses have been built in the area, and roads, lighting, and landscaping have been improved as a result. DC Brau, our pick for the best brewery in the District, is located just across Bladensburg Road NE from Fort Lincoln. Both Fort Lincoln Park and Dakota Playground are centrally located in the neighborhood and offer recreation and nature, as is the U.S. National Arboretum.
Fort Lincoln is a small, blossoming neighborhood tucked in between a park and a beautiful cemetery in Northeast DC. The area is nadmed after a Civil War fort that was constructed as an outer defense for the city of Washington. The fort is located just across the Maryland border in Prince George’s County, and can still be visited today along with the expansive Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
President Lyndon B. Johnson saw the neighborhood as a model of a planned community in the 1960’s, and that growth and expansion is continuing and becoming fully realized in the 21st Century.
The neighborhood does not have a Metro station, but there are Metrobus lines that come through and can shuttle residents to the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood or Brookland-CUA stations on the Red Line. New York Ave NE offers a direct route into downtown DC and out to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295), less than two miles away. The Capital Beltway can also be accessed by New York Ave NE, and is less than six miles away from Fort Lincoln. Both Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland, can be reached in less than 30 minutes.
Fort Lincoln is situated within Northeast DC, and its borders are Bladensburg Rd NE to the northwest, Fort Lincoln Cemetery and Colmar Manor, Maryland, to the northeast, and New York Ave NE and South Dakota Ave NE to the south.
