Brentwood Features
The Brentwood neighborhood is predominantly commercial space with a spattering of smaller row homes and apartments. It is becoming a destination for both retail and commerce in DC. Rhode Island Row not only includes plenty of retail and restaurant space, but 274 apartments for rent. Union Market is breathing new life into the neighborhood as a year-round indoor food market that has become the culinary center of DC. For a neighborhood that is relatively close to the city center and has Metro access, Brentwood is among the most affordable in terms of convenience.
Brentwood Neighborhood Information
The name of the area comes from Washington City’s first mayor, Robert Brent, who in 1817 built the Brentwood Mansion at the corner of 6th St NE and Florida Avenue NE, which is actually not in the current Brentwood neighborhood. Interestingly enough, the land the Brentwood Mansion was built on was much bigger than the neighborhood today. The mansion is no longer standing, but the name remains.
Brentwood Transportation & Location
The neighborhood has two stations on Metro’s Red Line that are easily accessible: Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood at the northwest corner and NoMa-Gallaudet U-New York Ave at the southwest corner. Both New York Ave NE and Rhode Island Ave NE provide easy routes to downtown DC, as well to Prince George’s County, Maryland. New York Ave NE also reaches the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295) in less than three miles. Interstate 395 begins about two miles south of the area and heads out into Virginia and the Anacostia Freeway (DC Route 295) via I-695.
Brentwood lies within Northeast DC, and is one of the smallest neighborhoods in the District. Its borders are Montana Ave NE to the east, New York Ave NE and Gallaudet University to the south, the Metro Red Line and the Metropolitan Branch Trail to the west, and Rhode Island Ave NE to the north.
