Clarendon-Courthouse History & Housing

Once called Courtlands, Clarendon-Courthouse is a beautifully eclectic neighborhood that has served as Arlington's backbone since it was established in 1899. It is comprised of two previously existing communities. To the west, Clarendon: Arlington's early economic engine. To the east, Courthouse, as one might guess, is Arlington's civic center. Clarendon-Courthouse was one of the earliest developments in Arlington, and when the land was put up for sale to the public, new residents flocked to the area, scooping up plots for $100; payable interest-free at a dollar a week. It is appropriate that both sections of the neighborhood retain their names, rather than trying for a hybrid. By virtue of each section's independent development, the neighborhood's offerings happen to be in distinct areas, but combined, they provide all that one needs from an urban community.

Typical of Washington DC bedroom communities, early housing options consisted mainly of tasteful single-family homes, including farmhouses, bungalows, and foursquares. There are also a number of infill duplexes and townhouse communities. Since the late 1970's when the neighborhood's Metrorail stations were completed, Clarendon-Courthouse has seen a significant population increase, leading to the development of many high-rises, including apartment complexes and condominiums.

Clarendon-Courthouse Transportation & Location

Clarendon-Courthouse is appropriately serviced by Courthouse Metro Station and Clarendon Metro Station on the Orange and Silver Lines. Arlington Blvd (Route 50) connects to I-66 to the north, providing access to the District of Columbia; and to I-395 to the south, toward Alexandria.

Clarendon-Courthouse is bounded by Wilson Blvd to the northwest, 10th St to the south, and Courthouse Rd to the east.
