After the American Civil War, Old Glebe was a reasonably successful agricultural community. With the nearby Chain Bridge and several new roads leading to it, it became a prime location for farmers looking to sell their harvests to DC residents. As technology improved and railways and streetcars were introduced to Arlington County, Washingtonians were able to enjoy Virginia's natural beauty and escape stifling DC heat. By the same good fortune, District employees and their families were able to live in the less developed serenity of Arlington, while managing a daily commute to and from the city. The most famous regular visitor was President Woodrow Wilson, who enjoyed recreation at the newly opened Washington Golf & Country Club. Some long-time residents of the area remember him stopping his car to chat with them and other children, handing out coins and candies.
Old glebe remained largely undeveloped into the 20th century, though as a community, it certainly changed along with so many other Arlington neighborhoods as it grew to accommodate growing numbers of New Deal workers and defense workers, and the inevitable baby boom that would follow World War II. Old Glebe has no Metro Station, but it is nearest to the Ballston-MU Metro on the Orange and Silver lines, which is accessible via N Glebe Rd (VA-120). N Glebe Rd (VA-120) runs along the western end of Old Glebe, providing access to the District of Columbia; and to I-395 to the south, toward Alexandria.
Old Glebe is bounded by N Glebe Rd to the north and west, Military Rd to the east, and 36th St N to the south.
