Cherrydale Origins
Cherrydale takes its name from the cherry orchards that were planted by Dorsey Donaldson and his son-in-law, Robert Shreve. In 1893, when Donaldson petitioned to have a post office built in the area, he referred to the land as Cherrydale. This was convenient timing as railways were just being introduced to Arlington County, encouraging the influx of new residents and DC vacationers. The area developed slowly over the next fifty years, as individual tracts of land were purchased, subdivided, sold, and developed.
