Carlyle Features &  Amenities

In a neighborhood named for a merchant, it follows that the community should be one that celebrates commerce and innovation. Not only is Carlyle home to the US Patent & Trademark Office, but also the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Other points of interest include the African-American Heritage Park and John Carlyle Square Park. For a night out with a contemporary upscale feeling, we recommend Trademark Drink & Eat, or for swing dancing and great entertainment, The Carlyle Club: an Art Deco supper club. Carlyle is also conveniently adjacent to Old Town, which is constantly abuzz with activity.

Carlyle PropertyValues

Named for John Carlyle, this neighborhood is something of a contemporary counterpart to Old Town, Alexandria. Carlyle’s sleeker, more modern feel—mixing urban architecture with the area’s natural landscape—should come as no surprise when one learns that Carlyle is considered the economic engine of Alexandria. In such a young, business-oriented community, housing consists almost exclusively of condominiums.

Carlyle Early Days

While The Carlyle House does not fall within the borders of the Carlyle neighborhood, it is absolutely worth the visit and not at all far. Built very purposefully between the docks of the Potomac River and Alexandria’s market square, was a hotspot for activity during the colonial period. John Carlyle was a Scottish merchant in the 18th century who was well connected to many prominent figures, including the future president, George Washington. His house served as a military headquarters during the French & Indian War and was the site of the Congress of Alexandria. Many years later, the house also served as a hospital for Union soldiers after The Battle of Bull Run.

Carlyle Transit & Location

Carlyle can be easily accessed by the King St Metro or the Eisenhower Avenue Metro on the Blue and Yellow Lines. Duke St and Telegraph Rd provide quick connection to the I-495 Beltway.

Carlyle is located on the southern edge of Alexandria and is defined by Duke St to the north, Four Mile Run to the east, Cameron Run to the south, and Telegraph Rd to the west.
