West End Features & Amenities
Unsurprisingly, West End is the fastest-growing neighborhood in Alexandria. As such, it has an incredibly vibrant and innovative scene for food, drink, and entertainment. We recommend London Curry House, Rocklands Barbecue and Grilling Company, and Cafe Pizzaiolo for food; Port City Brewing Company for drink; and Nick’s Nightclub or the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra for entertainment. If the mood demands meals at home, head to Ben Brenman Park on Sunday mornings for the extensive and mouth-watering West End Farmers’ Market.
For recreation, West End is bisected by a string of beautiful green spaces, linked together by Holmes Run Stream and its tributaries. Among them are Tarleton Park, the aforementioned Ben Brenman Park, All Veterans Park, Dora Kelley Nature Park, and the Winkler Botanical Preserve.
West End Property Information
By a beautiful coincidence, the name ‘West End’ has a double meaning. While it is indeed the westernmost neighborhood in the city of Alexandria, it was originally a planned subdivision, developed by the West family. Being the westernmost, it has also become the largest neighborhood as Alexandria, with its back to the Potomac, has only been able to expand in one direction.
Like much of Alexandria, West End is home to plenty of residential neighborhoods featuring detached houses and town homes, but as a latter addition to the city, it features more modern dwellings, in the form of high rise condominiums and apartment complexes.
West End Historical Presence
The neighborhood is also home to a number of places of historical significance. The Virginia Theological Seminary, originally known as ‘An Education Society’ and the ’School of Prophets,’ was founded by Francis Scott Key to educate a new generation of church leaders to heal the moral and spiritual wounds left by the young nation’s battle for independence. Like so many institutions, it was converted to a hospital during the Civil War. It has since revived and flourished, now mingling with eighty acres of Alexandria’s gorgeous natural landscape. Fort Ward is also a popular stop for residents and visitors alike. Though it never came under attack, it was a 36-gun fortress built concurrently with several others to defend the District of Columbia immediately after Virginia’s secession from the Union.
West End Transit & Location
West End is served by the Van Dorn Metro on the Blue and Yellow Lines. I-395 cuts right through the neighborhood and Van Dorn St provides easy access to the I-495 Beltway to the south.
The West End neighborhood is bordered by King St to the north, N Quaker Lane to the east, the tracks of the Metrorail to the south, and the city of Annandale to the west.
