The neighborhood is popular with tourists, so there is always something to do. King St. is Old Town’s main drag, and home to some of Alexandria’s best shopping, as well as top restaurants and bars, many of which feature live music. We recommend Firehook Bakery for pastries and breakfast sandwiches, District Taco for casually delicious Mexican, and Southside 815 for classic Southern cuisine. Before or after dinner, one can take in a show at Little Theatre of Alexandria: the oldest award-winning theater in the DC Metro area.
For shopping and creature comforts Old Town is home to many unique spots, such as Marcela’s Yoga Boutique, Holistic Touch Center, Jeanne Griffin Interior Design Studio & Boutique, and Patina Polished Living. For free sensory stimulation, Old Town offers Jones Point Park and Torpedo Factory Art Center. Historic sites—or at least sites of history—abound throughout Old Town, Alexandria. Among them are Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop, Duvall’s Tavern, The Lyceum, George Washington’s House, and Christ Episcopal Church.
Among Old Town's most alluring elements, for current and prospective residents, are the river views, the cobblestone streets, and the beautiful colonial and Federalist architecture; all of which are very well kept, both by the city as well as by Old Town’s proud residents. The neighborhood’s housing options, which are among the more expensive in Northern Virginia, include some waterfront condominiums as well as plenty of brick rowhouses.
Named for John Alexander, the Scotsman that finally took possession of the land, Alexandria is a city of rich American history. As with any major port, the oldest part of town is on the water and Alexandria is no exception. Dating back to 1654, the area now known as Old Town was hugely important during the colonial period as well as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Prior to Alexandria’s incorporation, Hugh West’s tobacco warehouse on the Potomac had been established as the region’s main site for tobacco inspection, requiring all nearby shipments to pass through, and contributing to Alexandria’s long-lasting prominence as a port city. Old Town is also a neighborhood graced by the residence of many notable Americans, not the least of which is Commander George Washington who kept a townhouse on Cameron St.
Old Town can be easily accessed by King St Metro Station on the Blue and Yellow Lines. Once there, Old Town is a fantastically walkable neighborhood, but for an even easier day, King Street Trolley will get tourists and residents around, free of charge. If driving, Patrick St and Henry St are local sections of Route 1, which run straight through Old Town provide and access to I-395 to the north and I-495 to the south.
Old Town is located on the eastern edge of Alexandria and is bordered by the Potomac River to the east and south, the tracks of the Blue and Yellow Metro Lines to the west, and Mt. Vernon Trail to the north.
