Potomac Yard Features & Amenities
As with so many previously industrial sites, Potomac Yard is eastern Alexandria's destination for big box shopping and other creature comforts. The neighborhood is home to Potomac Yard Park and also borders Daingerfield Island: a beautiful patch of multi-use green space, named for the area's first landowners.
Potomac Yard History & Housing
Potomac Yard, while very new as a residential and commercial neighborhood, sits on land of great historical significance. The area was home to several plantations until in the 1830's congress commissioned the construction of a canal to connect the port of Alexandria to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and thus to DC, Maryland, and beyond. Though long-delayed by the Civil War, the area soon became developed as a railyard, providing great employment opportunities and helping to populate the neighboring town of Potomac, which has since been incorporated into Alexandria.
The "Pot Yard," as it was often known, was decommissioned in 1989 and plans for revitalization have only been in the works since then. Capitalizing on a finite parcel of land, housing opportunities consist primarily of condominiums and apartments as well as high-end townhouses.
Potomac Yard Transportation & Location
The Potomac Yard neighborhood is serviced by Braddock Road Metro, but the Potomac Yard Station is under construction and expected to open in 2020. Potomac yard is bisected by Jefferson Davis Hwy (Route 1) which provides quick access to I-395 to the north and I-495 (Capital Beltway) to the south.
Potomac Yard is bounded by Four Mile Run to the north, Commonwealth Ave to the west, Slaters Ln to the south, and the Potomac River to the east.
