It is true that theater can be pricey especially for big broadway musicals with large casts.  In fact, The Book of Mormon, which played at the Kennedy Center over the summer, sold some tickets for $250 each. But there are other options for more reasonably priced tickets.

According to Rachel Grossman of Dog & Pony DC, all DC theaters offer pay-what-you-can (PWYC) performances. These may be preview performances when a show first opens or perhaps on a specific day of the week. With this model, each person selects his own ticket price.

The Capital Fringe Festival has returned to DC from July 11 to July 28 for it’s eighth year. DC has a great theater scene at regular venues like the Kennedy Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Studio Theater, and Arena Stage, but the Capital Fringe Festival gives DC a taste of something different with lower ticket prices.

The Capital Fringe Festival takes place in 18 different venues across the city including Fort Fringe on New York Avenue in Northwest, Caos on F in the Penn Quarter neighborhood, GALA Theatre in Columbia Heights, Jin Lounge in the U Street Corridor, and Studio Theater in Logan Circle. Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company has been leasing their space at 641 D St in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Northwest DC since 2005. But now they are the proud owners of the 30,000-square-foot facility.

Woolly Mammoth was founded in 1980 and is known for innovative plays that defy convention.
