New Development in Ivy City

As more and more people are moving back into the District of Columbia, areas that were once not well known or considered off the beaten path are now becoming hotspots for real estate development. One of these areas is Ivy City, which is a small neighborhood located in Northeast DC between the very popular neighborhoods of Brookland and H Street Atlas District. Spurred by development of those two neighborhoods and the emergence of nearby Trinidad and Union Market, Ivy City has seen a recent renaissance. While property prices still remain well below the DC average, they have begun to rise this year and will likely continue to do so due to an abundance of recent development.

The biggest change in the neighborhood may be the Nike store that has opened in the old Hecht warehouse. It is Nike’s first community store on the East Coast. The warehouse also hosts Mom’s Organic market, Planet Fitness gym, and BicycleSPACE bike shop, and will see more development with a mix of retail and apartment buildings coming soon. Compass Coffee will open a roastery in Ivy City and Petco plans to open a store as well. There are several restaurants planned for the neighborhood in the coming months. For craft beer and spirit lovers, there are not one but three different choices in Ivy City. Atlas Brew Works, One Eight Distilling, and New Columbia Distillers (of Green Hat Gin) all call the neighborhood home. All of these developments are bringing visitors from outside of Ivy City, who are drawn to its industrial yet small village feel.

In terms of public transportation, the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro stop on the red line is 1.5 miles away and there are several Metrobus lines that service Ivy City, including the D3, D4, D8, E2, and E3. New York Avenue NE provides a good route both for getting downtown and out to Maryland and Route 295.

Ivy City lies in Northeast DC, and its borders are West Virginia Avenue NE to the east, Mount Olivet Road NE and Gallaudet University to the south, 9th Street NE to the west, and New York Avenue NE to the north.
