New Condo Project on 14th Street Starts Construction in June

A new condo project on 14th Street will replace the Central Union Mission, a shelter for homeless men. After almost 30 years at the Logan Circle site, the shelter will move to a new location at Gales School on Massachusetts Avenue. This will enable the site at 14th and R Streets in Northwest DC to become a 51-unit boutique condo development with ground-floor retail for four high-end businesses.

Jeffrey Schonberger is the developer for the new condo project on 14th Street, along with architect Eric Colbert. Schonberger started planning the project back in 2006 by seeking approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board.

The new condo project on 14th Street will have a mix of units ranging from 800 to 1,000 square feet across 30 different floor plans. Most of the units will be one or two bedroom condos, but a couple will be studio units. Some will be loft-style condos, while others will be two-story duplexes. Since the architect is dealing with existing structures, some units may include exposed brick or little nooks. Prices per unit will range from $419,900 to $849,900.

The condo project includes four buildings -- the main Central Union Mission building at 1350 R Street NW, as well as 1625 to 1629 14th Street NW. The buildings on 14th Street will grow in height with new construction on top. In order to comply with regulations for historic buildings, the new additions will be set back from the historic facades. Because these are existing buildings, there will be no underground parking.

Construction on the new condo project on 14th Street is slated to being in June and last 12-14 months. The project does not yet have a name, although “The Mission” has been suggested as reminder of the building’s previous occupants.
