CityMarket at O has roots dating back to 1881 with the O Street Market at the corner of 7th and O Streets, NW.  In 2002, Roadside Development purchased the deteriorating site with hopes to revitalize the Shaw neighborhood.

Shaw is undergoing lots of changes from the Howard Theatre to retail and residential projects.  The neighborhood has not developed at the same pace as the surrounding neighborhoods of Logan Circle, Chinatown, and U Street.  But since the 2008 economic crash is behind us and financing is once again available, big projects in Shaw like CityMarket at O are now under construction.

CityMarket at O encompasses six buildings over two blocks between O and P Streets, and 7th and 9ths Streets.  The mixed-use development will include residential units, a hotel, an underground parking garage, retail, restaurants, and a new Giant grocery store.  Plus, the new CityMarket at O development will incorporate the historic brick facade of the market.

The first parts of the CityMarket at O development are the 500 parking space garage (with car sharing, bike sharing, and electric car charging stations) and 75,000 square foot grocery store (to replace the old one that was demolished in late 2011).  The Giant Food Store is currently under construction with plans to open in late 2013.  The CityMarket at O Giant will keep elements of the original market building including the 42 ft. high roof, which collapsed under the weight of snow in 2003.  The recreated roof will include a 150 foot monitor skylight window, adding abundant rays of natural light.  In addition, the CityMarket at O Giant will be much larger than most urban grocery stores with a large prepared food section including a sushi bar.

After the garage and grocery store, the next items in the CityMarket at O development will be the 182-room Cambria Suites hotel (opening in early 2014) and 400 apartments along 8th Street.  Ninety units of affordable senior housing on 7th Street and 145 condos along 9th Street will follow with delivery in fall 2014.

Just this month, A&D Neighborhood Bar opened on 9th Street in CityMarket at O.  It promises to be a neighborhood hangout for the new residents coming to CityMarket.  By the end of 2014, look for a fully completed CityMarket at O.
