amazon coming to crystal city

Image: Moment Editorial/Getty Images

The big news for Arlington, VA is that the e-commerce colossus, Amazon, has chosen this Washington DC suburb to host its east coast headquarters. More accurately, the enormous project known as Amazon HQ2 has been divided into two parts--one to be run out of Arlington, VA and the other to be run out of the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, NY. Officially, the Northern Virginia HQ2 will be part of what has now been branded National Landing: a sort of Franken-hood comprised of Crystal City as well as parts of Pentagon City and Alexandria’s Potomac Yard.

Not only is Arlington County prime for Amazon, boasting--perhaps for the first time ever--a 20% vacancy rate with regard to commercial real estate. JBG…

Washingtonian

As you can probably guess from looking at its construction, the word “renovate” means, at the most basic level, “to make new again” and that is exactly what is happening throughout DC’s Petworth neighborhood. Without going into cringe-worthy metaphors like how the new Safeway on Georgia Ave NW and various new eateries are Petworth’s state-of-the-art kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite worktops. It must be expressed that the gorgeous and thoughtful renovation being done inside Petworth’s rowhomes and condo conversions is a perfect parallel to the renovation of the entire neighborhood.

Especially impressive is the manner in which investors are making Petworth new again. They are not simply tearing down and building…

The Armed Forces Retirement Home will soon begin a project on its Northwest DC Campus that is now ten years in the making. On Monday, March 19th, the AFRH issued a solicitation to developers. Paying its operating costs from a trust fund rather than federal appropriations, the AFRH has had difficulty making ends meet over the years, but thanks to some creative thinking and congressional approval, a portion of the 272-acre campus has been allocated for private development. This will create a new revenue stream from which the fund can be topped off.

Though various ups and downs have halted the forward progress of this project, the delays may have been a blessing. Petworth, the neighborhood that shares the AFRH’s northwest border, has undergone a…

Georgetown Rowhomes

Thanks to a construction boom following the American Civil War, the dominant housing style in Georgetown is the brick rowhome. Whether you call them rowhomes, row houses, or townhouses; these attached and semi-detached dwellings are icons of class and charm and they do not come cheap. The modest, 1895-built house at 3419 Q St NW where John F Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier first met just hit the market for a cool $1,725,000.

The majority of Georgetown rowhomes are Federal or Victorian in style and are quite tastefully unique--many with English basements, offering considerable rental potential. As is the case in many of DC’s historic districts, architectural variance becomes a viable motif, provided that the buildings are well preserved. Georgetown…
