Ballston-Virginia Square Property Values

Recently, investors have made efforts to turn the neighborhood into the fully urbanized community it was destined to become. Those efforts along with the presence of both Marrymount University and the Arlington Campus of George Mason University, it is no wonder that condominiums and apartments have become increasingly popular.

Ballston-Virginia Square Beginnings

Ballston, named for the Ball family that settled in the area two centuries ago has a recent history as a retail stronghold of Arlington. In the 1950's, the area thrived economically, thanks in large part to the development of the Parkington Shopping Center. It since been reworked and renamed: Ballston Common Mall, and helps to support Arlington along with larger-scale retailers that have moved in in recent years. All of this is fitting since during the 1800's Ball's Crossroads was established as a major trading center.

Residential development of Ballston began, like many adjacent neighborhoods, shortly following World War I. Some smaller clusters of houses popped up in the late 1800's, but the first sizable subdivisions appeared in the 1920's. By the 1930's several garden apartment complexes were being constructed to support the steady population increase.

Virginia Square, with which Ballston has since merged, was also platted as a retail center. No surprises here as the neighborhood was named for the Virginia Square Shopping Center which was erected in the early days of development. Thanks to the opening of a trolley line that ran from Rosslyn to Falls Church, both Ballston and Virginia Square became accessible and very popular as retail centers during the mid-20th century.
