Lyon Park's layout combines a traditional grid with a number of meandering streets. Much like its northwest counterpart, Lyon Village, the neighborhood's dwellings are primarily detached houses. Dominant Styles include Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Craftsman, and Queen Anne, as well as simple wooden bungalows. Some houses are new, standing on the sites of the old, but many originals, built during an era of sturdier construction, have held fast.
Lyon Park Origins
Lyon Park was the first of several communities developed by Frank Lyon within Arlington County in an effort to house the vast numbers of Americans that began making their way toward Washington DC immediately following the first World War. Before the development of Lyon's numerous communities, gambling dens, brothels, and saloons plagued the Arlington bank of the Potomac River. In order to make good use of the land that he and others believed was being wasted and defiled, Lyon used the influence of a citizens' league as well as his paper, "The Alexandria County Monitor" to rid the waterfront of vice.
Lyon Park Transportation & Location
Lyon Park is serviced by Clarendon Metro Station on the Orange and Silver Lines. Arlington Blvd (Route 50) connects to I-66 to the north, providing access to the District of Columbia; and to I-395 to the south, toward Alexandria.
Lyon Park is bounded by N Irving St to the west, Arlington Blvd to the south and east, and 10th St to the north.
