Lyon Park Origins
Lyon Park was the first of several communities developed by Frank Lyon within Arlington County in an effort to house the vast numbers of Americans that began making their way toward Washington DC immediately following the first World War. Before the development of Lyon's numerous communities, gambling dens, brothels, and saloons plagued the Arlington bank of the Potomac River. In order to make good use of the land that he and others believed was being wasted and defiled, Lyon used the influence of a citizens' league as well as his paper, "The Alexandria County Monitor" to rid the waterfront of vice.
