Brookland Features & Amenities
12th St NE is the current commercial center of the neighborhood and provides residents with restaurants, hardware stores and grocery stores, including Yes! Organic Market. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the centerpiece of Catholic University, is the largest Catholic church in the United States and is definitely worth a visit regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, as is the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. One of the best-kept secrets in the city is the 42 acres of farmland at the Franciscan Monastery, which include gardens, a grotto, and catacombs.
Brookland Property Values
The Brookland neighborhood is one of tree-lined streets and single-family homes. Often referred to as "Little Rome" due to the nearly 60 Catholic institutions in the area, this neighborhood centers around Catholic and Trinity Universities. Brookland is named after Colonel Jehiel Brooks, who came to DC after fighting in the War of 1812 and whose 1840 Greek revival mansion still stands in the neighborhood that bears his name.
The idyllic, small-town feel is one that attracts residents to Brookland, but that could change soon with the development of a new town center. Abdo’s Arts Walk has been in the works for a few years now and will include 720 housing units and 83,000 square feet of retail space in addition to the studio space for artists. In addition to the many single-family homes, there are an increasing number of condos and rental options.
Brookland Transportation & Location
The neighborhood is serviced by both the Brookland-CUA (at its western end) and the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood (at its southwestern corner) Metro Stations on the Red Line. There are several bus lines that service the area, and Rhode Island Ave NE provide straight routes for driving to downtown DC. For neighborhoods that are relatively close to the city center and Metro access, Brookland is among the most affordable in terms of convenience.
Brookland lies entirely within Northeast DC, and its borders are Rhode Island Ave NE to the south, the Metro Red Line and Metropolitan Branch Trail to the west, Taylor Ave NE and Michigan Ave NE to the north, and South Dakota Ave NE to the east.
