Bluemont draws its name from the town of Bluemont in Loudoun County. On its way to the town, the Washington & Old Dominion rail line stopped at Bluemont Junction in what is now the Bluemont neighborhood. During the Civil War, the area was considered no-man's-land between Union and Confederate forces and by the end of the conflict, the land and its resources were all but depleted. Residents banded together to rebuild, but the process was slow-going and the economic repercussions were severe. Just in time, passenger trains began to service Arlington County, bringing new residents as well as much needed revenue.
The subdivision and platting of Bluemont began shortly thereafter, but early development was slowed by the Great Depression. The most rapid stretch of building came on the heels of World War II. While the neighborhood is home to several high rise apartment buildings and condominiums, and townhomes, Bluemont's primary housing options include Colonials, Cape Cods, ramblers, brick bungalows, and a few contemporaries.
