Aurora Highlands Housing Styles
Perhaps the most unique style of dwelling in Aurora Highlands are Dana Milton Morrill's concrete homes. They are sturdily built, by a process of the architect's own invention, 16-inch square concrete blocks, laid with the help of reusable steel supports. Seven of the original ten still stand. Keeping these company are a bounty of Craftsman homes and bungalows. The majority of the houses in Aurora Highlands fit this mold and were built between 1910 and 1940. Mail-order plans and kit homes were increasingly popular during the early twentieth century. They were also no doubt very useful as Arlington became flooded with new residents in the 1930s thanks to the federal jobs created by The New Deal.
Other dwelling styles include foursquares, Colonial Reveivals, Dutch Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals, Spanish Mission Revivals, duplexes and a pair of garden apartment buildings.
Aurora Highlands History & Development
Aurora Highlands was developed predominantly between 1896, when it was first subdivided, and 1930. There were originally three subdivisions: Addison Heights, Aurora Hills, and Virginia Highlands. In the late 1950's the area encompassing all three came to be known officially as Aurora Highlands. The platting and design of the area by multiple developers and architects can be seen in the widely varying architectural styles.
