Fairlington Origins

The landscape of Fairlington originally existed in both Fairfax and Arlington Counties, from which its hybrid-style name is derived. It shares a common theme with neighboring communities, Columbia Forest and Claremont, but its design is unique unto itself. In 1941, the land which had remained prior thereto heavily wooded and otherwise rural, was purchased by the Defense Homes Corporation, a component of the National Housing Agency.

Ground had just been broken at what would become, in less than two years, The Pentagon. Defense Homes Corporation worked tirelessly between 1942 and 1944 to complete Fairlington, which was essentially the largest apartment complex in the nation. Nearly three and a half thousand garden apartments were completed within those two years.

Residents of all associations are represented by the Fairlington Citizens Association.
