It is fitting that Shirlington, as it is named for Shirley Memorial Highway, was the brain-child of an automobile dealer. Joseph Cherner created the Shirlington Corporation to develop a shopping center that would serve the retail needs of nearby Fairlington and Parkfairfax: a populous neighborhood just over the Alexandria line. The first shops opened in 1944. Shirlington was truly not a neighborhood, but a shopping center. As its success waned as competition from modern shopping malls began to increase.
