Shirlington Early Days

It is fitting that Shirlington, as it is named for Shirley Memorial Highway, was the brain-child of an automobile dealer. Joseph Cherner created the Shirlington Corporation to develop a shopping center that would serve the retail needs of nearby Fairlington and Parkfairfax: a populous neighborhood just over the Alexandria line. The first shops opened in 1944. Shirlington was truly not a neighborhood, but a shopping center. As its success waned as competition from modern shopping malls began to increase. Shirlington was in need of a renaissance.

Shirlington Features & Amenities 

The 1980's were a time of great adjustment for Shirlington as the shopping center underwent huge renovations, including the extension of 28th St (now called Campbell Ave) and the construction of condominiums and other residential buildings. Now, it is much more than a retail plaza, as it plays host to The Signature Theatre, a new library with state-of-the-art amenities, and numerous local restaurants. The cozy and convenient layout allows it to live up to its status as an urban village.

Shirlington Transit & Location

Shirlington has no Metro station, but Campbell Ave connects conveniently to I-395, providing fast and easy access to and from the District of Columbia.

Shirlington is bounded by Arlington Mill Dr to the north, I-395 to the east, S Woodrow St to the south, and S Walter Reed Dr to the west.
