Nauck Origins

Nauck is the longest-standing African-American community in Arlington County. The neighborhood's roots begin with Levi and Sarah Ann Jones who had been freed prior to the Civil War and went on to purchase 46 acres of land in what was then called Green Valley. The Joneses began selling lots to other black men and women, many of whom were former residents of Freedman's Village. In 1874, John D. Nauck, a DC resident, purchased the 46 acres and platted it for sale. The neighborhood then became known as Nauck, though Green Valley was still used interchangeably for some time.

For over a century, residents of Nauck stepped up to provide opportunities and services, to which they were so often denied access in the segregated mainstream world around them. As a result, Nauck today is an ethnically diverse neighborhood with an immensely strong sense of community. A prime example is Nauck's late-19th century one-room schoolhouse, which has evolved and expanded into the Drew Model School: a countywide magnet school since 2000.
