Prior to the platting of Douglas Park and New Arlington, a fair number of grander Victorian-style homes were constructed, especially Queen Annes. The area's popularity only increased at the turn of the 20th century thanks to the establishment of the Washington, Arlington, and Falls Church electric railway lines. Today, the neighborhood is home to some of these original Queen Annes as some infill of Cape Cods, but the primary style of single-family homes is the modest wooden bungalow. Douglas park is also the site of a number of garden condominiums and highrise apartment buildings.
Douglas Park Early Days
Douglas Park, named for the Douglas family which was once prominent in the area, is now a conflation of two subdivisions that developed in 1927: Douglas Park and New Arlington. Many of the structures still standing in the neighborhood today were part of the development of the 1930's and 1940's when so man Americans flooded the DC area to begin their new federal government jobs.
