Residents of Fort Davis are never at a loss for recreation as the middle of the neighborhood is home to Fort Davis Recreation Center, and the community is sandwiched between Fort Davis Park, an understated woody green space; and Fort Dupont Park, a vast stretch of green with opportunities for sports, jogging, hiking, biking, and live music.
Fort Davis Origins
Fort Davis is named for the Civil War fort that once stood on the site of the abutting Fort Davis Park. Like the adjacent neighborhood of Good Hope, it was barely developed until the early days of World War II. With the previous influx of new federal workers and their families, due to FDR's New Deal initiative, and the new trend of defense workers in need of housing, developer Max Sugar purchased and platted the area.
By 1940, he had built the fist of 250 sturdy, two-story brick houses with front and back yards which he aimed to sell to upper-income government employees. While ramblers and Sugar's brick homes dominate the real estate landscape in Fort Davis, there are also a number of frame houses including Colonials, bungalows and Cape Cods. Two-story duplexes are also popular and there are a few garden apartments along Pennsylvania Ave SE.
Fort Davis Transportation & Location
Fort Davis has no Metro Station, however, Anacostia Metro Station on the Green Line is located nearby in the Buena Vista neighborhood. Pennsylvania Ave SE provides quick access across the river to Capitol Hill as well as east to Northern Maryland.
Fort Davis is bounded by Ridge Rd SE to the north, Southern Ave SE to the east, Pennsylvania Ave SE to the south, and Alabama Ave SE to the west.
