Deanwood Features & Amenities

Deanwood is known for its small-town or even country-town vibe, bolstered by minimalist architecture on good-sized lots and ample cover from dense tree growth. It sits on land that was part of a tobacco plantation before the Civil War. Afterward, the Benning Racetrack and the availability of affordable lots attracted families, many of which are still active in the community today. Among Deanwood born and bred, is the magnificent soul singer, Marvin Gaye; in whose honor the neighborhood's Marvin Gaye Park is named.

Deanwood Property Values

Deanwood housing options consist primarily of one-story cottages and bungalows, and the occasional Colonial. The neighborhood is also home to a fair number of two-story duplexes and small garden apartment buildings. Older houses in disrepair have been torn down, making way for larger ones. Civic ordinances have restricted house foundation area to two fifths of the lot size, but contractors have built up three-story houses in an effort to provide more living space, while skirting zoning restrictions. The Deanwood Civic Association is looking to alter the ratio to three fifths, stating that residents would rather look at larger houses than alter the neighborhood's skyline.

Funding has recently come through for the St. Stephens Apartments, which will offer affordable housing and numerous amenities and services to residents.

Deanwood Transit & Location

Deanwood is serviced by the Deanwood Metro Station on the Orange and Silver lines. The Anacostia Fwy (I-295) runs along the western border of Deanwood, enabling residents easy access into Washington city center, and quick access outside the District of Columbia to Maryland.

Deanwood is bounded by Eastern Ave NE to the north, Division Ave NE to the east, Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave NE to the south, and Anacostia Ave NE to the west.
