The Chastleton is a 300-unit cooperative building located in Dupont Circle. It was built in 1920 and underwent a full renovation in 2007. A cooperative, or co-op, is different than condo ownership in that each owner is a shareholder in a corporation, rather than a deed holder and owner of real property. Co-ops are owned and run jointly by its members, and this is one of the most popular ones in DC.

Located at 1701 16th St. NW, at the corner of R St. NW, the Chastleton features eight floors and a rooftop deck. Some units come with parking and there is a 24/7 front desk and exercise room. The Chastleton includes studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, ranging from less than 300 to nearly 1,000 square feet. Included in the condo fees are cable TV, lawn…

What is soul food? It’s not just fried chicken and mac and cheese anymore. According to Adrian Miller, author of Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time, “Soul food is best described as the food that African American migrants took with them when they left the rural south and settled in different parts of the country.”

Florida Avenue Grill in the U Street neighborhood markets itself as the oldest soul food restaurant in the world. The restaurant opened in 1944 and is the longest surviving soul food restaurant. Imar Hutchins, owner of Florida Avenue Grill says, “What we're calling soul food today, is probably the original fusion cuisine. There's so much African cultural retention in what we eat. It's also a blend of…

The Lincoln Theater on U Street in Northwest DC has been a cultural landmark for over 90 years with performers like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently, Alicia Keys. After a period of financial insolvency, the theater has a new operator with concerts scheduled for September and October.

The Lincoln Theater opened in 1922 as a 1,200-seat music venue for those who were not allowed to perform in segregated concert halls. But the theater started to decline during the 1968 race riots and was eventually boarded up for renovations in 1983. In 1994, the theater reopened under the management of the U Street Theater Foundation, who often relied on funding from the city.

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) took over in January…
