Where to Find Authentic Chinese Cuisine
Chinatown in DC’s Penn Quarter seems like the obvious place to find authentic Chinese cuisine. But according to Todd Kliman, Dining Editor for Washingtonian Magazine, the best place for gourmet Chinese food in the DC area is Rockville, MD.
Kilman says that many Chinese immigrants first settled in Chinatown in the 1950s and 60s. But since that time, they have gradually been moving into Maryland. Edward Shen, co-owner of Seven Seas restaurant in Rockville, immigrated to the US in the 1970s and opened his Chinese restaurant in 1986. When his wife moved to Maryland from Seattle in 1993, she says, “He called Rockville a Little Taipei, meaning that I can get all sorts of gourmet Chinese food in Rockville area. ...Rockville is becoming a small Chinatown in…
Hot Chinatown Properties
Washington D.C.’s Chinatown properties are in one of the city’s more eclectic neighborhoods, with flashing lights and that iconic and ornate “Friendship Archway” over H Street.
While Chinatown does have a good number of Asian eateries, this is an increasingly diverse pocket of the city and real estate here is in high demand. Chinatown properties are in a long-established developed area, so the majority of properties on the market are turnovers. But a few new projects are in the works, so home buyers or renters set on having a brand new space to break in may find some opportunities here, although they’re among the more expensive in the city.
Chinatown properties put residents quite close to the Verizon Center, which anchors the neighborhood. The Spy…

Walmart Coming to Chinatown Area
A new Walmart is coming to the Chinatown area on H Street near the intersection with New Jersey Avenue NW in Ward 6. It will be next to Gonzaga High School and across from the Government Printing Office. The new development will include a 4-story 85,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter encased in large glass windows. This is about half the size of an average Walmart, but within that Supercenter, shoppers will find 40,000 square feet of grocery and pharmacy areas.
