A Brightwood home sold for a record amount recently. The home was located at 5821 4th Street NW at Oglethorpe, just a few blocks north of Missouri, and was listed for $649,000. It closed at $656,000 on February 15. The three-level Brightwood home that sold for a record amount was a contemporary, detached home built in 1939.

The home has four bedrooms and four full baths, all freshly renovated last year and has hardwood floors throughout. This is a 3,000-square-foot home with a new white gourmet kitchen, luxury bath, breakfast bar and custom closet. The Brightwood Walmart is coming to Georgia Avenue, NW in Ward 4 near Missouri Avenue.  It will be the first Walmart to open in the District.  The development project began in September 2011, but has been plagued by delays from various opponents.

The new Brightwood Walmart development sits on the site of the former Curtis Chevrolet dealership. After demolition began, residents sought protected status for the site from the Historic Preservation Board.  But development continued after the application was denied.

In February, Occupy DC and Respect DC teamed up to stage a demonstration at the Brightwood Walmart construction site.  The protest prevented some crews from entering the construction site that day, but did not end the project.

How much will the Kennedy Street Federal Streetscape Funds Help Change the Area?

The 1 mile stretch of Kennedy Street NW from Georgia Avenue to North Capitol Street has always been an eye sore and a forgotten about commercial corridor.  The Federal government announced on August 7, 2012 that they will designate a million dollars towards upgrading the streetscape on Kennedy St NW.  The District will be matching those funds so a total of $2 million will be invested in improving the streetlights, trees/landscaping, and sidewalks.  This will be the largest investment in a long time for this area which consists of low-scale housing and a handful of markets and food places. 

Is $2 million enough?  I don't think so.  This area really lacks adequate public…
