Fairlawn Housing & Schools
Fairlawn housing stock consists of an eclectic mix of styles. Simple, understated townhouses are quite popular, the majority of which are limited to clusters of two, allowing for front and side yards. Joining them are plentiful, bungalows, foursquares, Colonials, and ramblers, as well as numerous garden apartments and condominiums.
The neighborhood plays host to Anacostia High School, Kramer Middle School, and the Anacostia Neighborhood Library. For recreation, one needs only to cross Anacostia Freeway via pedestrian bridge to get to Anacostia Park.
Fairlawn Early Days
Fairlawn, like so many communities south of DC's rivers, remained beautiful sprawling farmland until the late 1800's. At that point a few families began building and living in large stately homes and by the 1920's, Fairlawn had become a rather popular bedroom community, especially among those working on Capitol Hill or in the Washington Navy Yard. After decades of change and growth, the neighborhood of Fairlawn, with only a river and a narrow park separating it from downtown DC, has become quite attractive to house hunters.
