Barry Farm Features & Properties

While housing styles vary somewhat within the Barry Farm community, dominant by far are townhouses, arranged in four- to six-home buildings. Barry Farm Recreation and Aquatic Center and nearby Anacostia Park provide ample opportunity for exercise and play.

Barry Farm History

Barry Farm derives its name quite simply from the land on which the neighborhood now stands. It was farmland owned before the American Civil War by James Barry. Shortly after the war, General Oliver Howard, who served then as the Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau, acquired government funding to purchase the farm. It was then subdivided and platted to be sold to freedmen and their families for a few hundred dollars per lot. This was the first instance of African-American land ownership within the District of Columbia.
