Takoma Park Property Values

Originally planned and platted with Victorian architecture in mind, the remaining Queen Annes and other Victorian style homes truly define the neighborhood’s aesthetic character. Other housing styles abound, including Cape Cods, bungalows and cottages, Dutch and Georgian Colonials, and ramblers. While single-family homes dominate the market, Takoma Park, like many streetcar suburbs in the DC Metro Area saw the development of multi-family dwellings with the influx of new government employees and their families. Many high rise and garden style condominiums and apartments are scattered near the center of town.

Takoma Park History

Taking its name from an American Indian word for Mount Rainier (snow-covered mountain), Takoma Park, relative to the District of Columbia, is a suburban mountain with elevations up to 350 feet. This early, planned commuter suburb, originally traversing the northeast boundary of the District was purchased and developed by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert. Gilbert took up residence in a stately mansion on the Maryland side and worked tirelessly in expanding and improving his project and ensuring its prosperity with the construction of a resort hotel. In 1890 when Takoma Park was incorporated, he became the city’s first mayor.
