Anacostia

Anacostia

Housing stock in Anacostia features mostly attached and detached rowhouses and garden apartments, but the neighborhood is also home to Colonials, bungalows, ramblers, and several Victorian homes. With newfound appeal and the influx of more dining and retail options, it is likely that a number of condominiums will be proposed, but residents hope throughout development to retain the neighborhood's vibrant character and sense of community.

Anacostia Features & Amenities

Among other points of interest, Anacostia is home to the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site which contains Douglass' estate, Cedar Hill. Residents can also enjoy the offerings of Anacostia Arts Center, Anacostia Playhouse, the Anacostia Community Museum, and the Anacostia Heritage Trail. For recreation, Anacostia Park and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail are just over the freeway. One of the more exciting projects in the works is the 11th Street Bridge Park, an elevated park that will give new life to an already existing structure. The project has been likened to New York's world-famous High Line and similar elements can be seen in Yards Park, just across the river, adjacent to the Navy Yard.

Anacostia Housing & History

Housing stock in Anacostia features mostly attached and detached rowhouses and garden apartments, but the neighborhood is also home to Colonials, bungalows, ramblers, and several Victorian homes. With newfound appeal and the influx of more dining and retail options, it is likely that a number of condominiums will be proposed, but residents hope throughout development to retain the neighborhood's vibrant character and sense of community.

Anacostia takes its name from the Anacostia River, which was named by the Nacotchtank Indians that originally inhabited the area. In the first half of the 20th Centruy, the community was known as Uniontown and served as a suburb that housed primarily workers in nearby military sites and factories. By the end of the 1960's the area had fallen into decline and despite its rich character, was not seen as an inviting place to live. Now it has been targeted by investors of all sorts and the neighborhood is on the rise in a very big way.

Anacostia Transit & Location

Anacostia has no Metro Station, however, the Anacostia Metro Station on the Green Line is located nearby in the Buena Vista neighborhood.

Anacostia is bounded by Good Hope Rd SE to the north, Morris Rd SE to the south, and Anacostia Fwy to the west, and the eastern border is located between Avalon Playground and Good Hope Ct.
