Washington Highlands Property Information

Housing stock in Washington Highlands consists primarily of townhouses and garden apartments and two-story duplexes. Washington Highlands is home to Ferebee-Hope Recreation, and nearby are Oxon Run Park and Bellevue’s state-of-the-art library which opened in 2012.

Washington Highlands Origins

Washington Highlands was originally conceived by Colonel Arthur E. Randle, a newspaperman who vowed before the turn of the 20th Century to help make the District of Columbia the most beautiful city in the world. Following the success of his previous subdivision, Congress Heights, planning and development began in 1904. Despite economic hardship, the building of hundreds of homes continued throughout the Great Depression, partly due to a need for a sewer system which would only be approved by the city based on an adequate number of residents. Though several hundred more homes were constructed, much of the area remained farmland.

All of that changed in the 1940’s when World War II brought several hundred thousand defense workers to the District and housing was in short supply. During the war years over 700 new homes were built in Washington Highlands, largely due to the creation of the National Capital Housing Authority. In 1950, Washington Highlands became one of the first residentially desegregated neighborhoods in the district.

Washington Highlands Transit & Location

Washington Highlands has no Metro Station, however, the Congress Heights Metro Station on the Green line is located nearby in the Shipley neighborhood. Proximity to I-295 provides quick access to Downtown DC and Alexandria VA

Washington Highlands is bounded by Valley Ave SE to the north, 13th St to the east, Southern Ave SE to the W to the west.
